SUCCESSFUL EMBRAER TRIAL FLIGHT

An Embraer ERJ-190-100 jet aircraft, operated by Embraer Commercial Aviation as a non-commercial trial and demonstration flight, visited St Helena Airport between Wednesday 30 November and Friday 2 December 2016. The flight, carrying 11 crew, including two SA Airlink pilots, arrived from Recife, Brazil, and made a smooth landing on Runway 02 (from the south).

Another milestone for St Helena Airport was achieved today, Wednesday 26 October 2016, with Air Safety Support International (ASSI) issuing a second Aerodrome Certificate to St Helena Airport - having been satisfied that the Airport infrastructure, aviation security measures and air traffic control service complies with international aviation safety and security standards.

As part of an International study to be able to deliver more accurate weather forecasts across the South Atlantic, a NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) ‘flying laboratory’ is planning to operate over St Helena this coming weekend, to undertake a series of weather-related measurements.

On board will be the team from Flight Calibration Services Limited (FCSL) for the purpose of undertaking routine Calibration Flights in connection with the navigation aids at the Airport.

​St Helena Government today confirms that further safety and operational work is required prior to the Official Opening of the Island’s new Airport – and that this event has therefore been postponed. While this means that the Airport will not officially open on 21 May 2016 as originally planned, the safety of aircraft and passengers is of course paramount.

History was once again made on St Helena today as the first large passenger jet aircraft, a Boeing 737-800 (ZS-ZWG), touched down at St Helena’s new Airport shortly after 12.00 noon. This is the actual Boeing aircraft which will serve the St Helena/Johannesburg route.

St Helena residents are by now well aware that the new St Helena Airport will open soon and that, for the first time, the Island will be linked to the rest of the world by air - but may be less familiar with the airline which will serve the route. That’s about to change. The first airline to fly scheduled flights to St Helena will be British Airways (operated by Comair).
