As part of the accreditation process for St Helena Airport a number of emergency response exercises will be carried out during October and November 2015. These are important exercises for the Airport and the St Helena Emergency Services – both for the accreditation process and to ensure that emergency plans are tested and exercised as part of the Island’s Major Incident Response Plan.

On Friday 4 September 2015 Basil Read was granted temporary use of the St Helena Airport runway by Air Support Safety International (ASSI). This heralds an historic milestone next week when a Beechcraft King Air 200 aircraft is due to land at the Airport to carry out a series of calibration flights. This will be the first ever plane to land on St Helena.

Justin Rothwell, Senior Aerodrome Inspector from Air Safety Support International (ASSI) was on-Island between 29 August and 5 September 2015. The purpose of his visit was to undertake an assessment to verify the conditions required for intermediary use of the runway for calibration flights.

Closure of Airport Site to the Public

​The Airport Project Team wishes to advise that with effect from Monday 17 August 2015 the Airport Site at Prosperous Bay Plain will be closed to the public. No access will be permitted by unauthorised personnel after this date, and members of the public are asked to adhere to the signage in place. Basil Read security personnel are also in place at Bradleys to control entry to the Airport site.

Final rock blast At Airport Site

The final rock blast for the St Helena Airport Project took place at the Airport site, Prosperous Bay Plain, at 5.20pm on Friday 20 March 2015. It was carried out as part of creating safer slopes in an existing borrow pit near the Navigational Directional Beacon site on the eastern side of the Runway. The blast used 975kgs of explosives and yielded approximately 3700 tonnes of blasted rock.
