Another major milestone for St Helena Airport was achieved yesterday afternoon, Tuesday 10 May 2016, when Air Safety Support International (ASSI) issued an Aerodrome Certificate to St Helena Airport - having been satisfied that the Airport infrastructure, aviation security measures and air traffic control service complies with international aviation safety and security standards.

History was once again made on St Helena today as the first large passenger jet aircraft, a Boeing 737-800 (ZS-ZWG), touched down at St Helena’s new Airport shortly after 12.00 noon. This is the actual Boeing aircraft which will serve the St Helena/Johannesburg route.

Another milestone was reached yesterday, Wednesday 14 October 2015, at St Helena Airport – as the Wildcat helicopter from HMS Lancaster touched down and became the first ever rotary-wing aircraft to land at the Island’s Airport.

Comair’s air services between St Helena Airport and OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg are scheduled to commence in late February 2016. Naturally, this date is dependent on final certification and operational readiness of St Helena Airport.

The calibration flights at St Helena Airport – led by Flight Calibration Services Limited (FCSL) working with TAB Charters – were completed yesterday Wednesday 23 September 2015, and the Beechcraft King Air 200 aircraft will depart St Helena for Namibia between 5am and 6am tomorrow Friday, ten days after its arrival.

The Beechcraft King Air 200 aircraft which will carry out calibration test flights at St Helena is now on her way from Namibe, Angola, and is due to arrive at St Helena Airport at around 1.30 to 2pm local time. The aircraft departed Angola at approximately 9.15am GMT this morning.

As part of the accreditation process for St Helena Airport a number of emergency response exercises will be carried out during October and November 2015. These are important exercises for the Airport and the St Helena Emergency Services – both for the accreditation process and to ensure that emergency plans are tested and exercised as part of the Island’s Major Incident Response Plan.

On Friday 4 September 2015 Basil Read was granted temporary use of the St Helena Airport runway by Air Support Safety International (ASSI). This heralds an historic milestone next week when a Beechcraft King Air 200 aircraft is due to land at the Airport to carry out a series of calibration flights. This will be the first ever plane to land on St Helena.

Justin Rothwell, Senior Aerodrome Inspector from Air Safety Support International (ASSI) was on-Island between 29 August and 5 September 2015. The purpose of his visit was to undertake an assessment to verify the conditions required for intermediary use of the runway for calibration flights.
